Artificial Intelligence Tools and Sustainable Development in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) Education in Nigeria
Main Article Content
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming educational systems worldwide by reshaping teaching,
learning, and assessment practices. In Nigeria, the integration of AI-driven tools into Science, Technology,
Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education presents significant opportunities for improving
educational quality and supporting sustainable national development. This paper examines how AI technologies
can enhance instructional delivery, promote inclusive learning environments, and equip learners with
competencies required in a rapidly evolving digital economy. The study adopted a conceptual and contextual
review methodology based on the analysis of recent scholarly publications, policy documents, and international
reports related to AI, STEAM education, and sustainable development. Evidence from the reviewed literature
indicates that AI-supported learning environments can enhance personalized learning, improve student
engagement, strengthen academic performance, and expand access to quality education in underserved
communities. The paper argues that AI technologies can help address persistent challenges in Nigerian education,
including overcrowded classrooms, inadequate laboratory infrastructure, limited digital resources, and unequal
access to qualified teachers across urban and rural communities. Successful implementation of AI tools requires
reliable digital infrastructure, teacher capacity development, ethical governance, and supportive national policies.
The study concludes that the effective integration of AI technologies into STEAM education can significantly
improve learning outcomes and contribute meaningfully to sustainable national development in Nigeria.
