Effectiveness of Standardized Testing in Promoting Equal Access to Education in Nigeria.

Abstract

The study examined the effectiveness of standardized testing in promoting equal access to education in Nigeria. The study was guided by three objectives from which three research questions were derived. The study adopted a descriptive survey design with a population of 5025 which included students, teachers, and educational administrators in Rivers State, Nigeria. The sample of the study was 380 respondents consisting of 300 students, 50 teachers, and 30 educational administrators. Stratified proportionate sampling technique was adopted in selecting the sample. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “Effectiveness of Standardized Testing in Promoting Equal Access to Education”. The instrument was validated by three experts in Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha method. The data collected was analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The finding of the study revealed a nuanced, somewhat conflicting role for standardized testing in promoting equal access to educational opportunities in Rivers State, and more broadly Nigeria. On one hand, there is a perception among respondents that standardized testing offers a formal, uniform benchmark for entry into higher education, which in theory should provide a fair platform for students across socio-economic backgrounds. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended among others that the government and educational authorities invest in improving infrastructure, providing adequate teaching materials, and increasing the availability of qualified teachers in rural and underserved regions. This would level the playing field for students from different regions and help bridge the gap in standardized test performance.
