Counselling as a Tool for Promoting Healthy Relationships Among Adolescents for Social Cohesion in Nigeria
Main Article Content
Abstract
In a society as diverse and complex as Nigeria, promoting healthy interpersonal relationships and fostering social cohesion is both a necessity and a challenge. With rising cases of domestic violence, community clashes, religious and ethnic conflicts, and youth restiveness, the importance of counselling as a proactive tool for building bridges of understanding and emotional resilience cannot be overstated. Counselling services, when effectively implemented across schools, families, workplaces, and communities, help individuals understand themselves and others better, manage emotions, resolve interpersonal conflicts, and contribute positively to societal peace and unity. However, the underutilization of counselling in Nigeria, due to stigma, lack of awareness, inadequately trained personnel, and poor integration into institutions, has limited its potential impact. This paper investigates the role of counselling in promoting healthy relationships among adolescents for social cohesion in Nigeria, drawing from both scholarly research and real-life interventions. The findings reveal that when counselling services are available and accessible, individuals demonstrate greater empathy, tolerance, improved communication, and conflict resolution skills. Furthermore, counselling provides critical support in trauma recovery and emotional regulation, all of which are vital for collective harmony. In summary, the study shows that counselling plays a crucial role in fostering emotionally intelligent citizens who can engage respectfully and constructively in society. The paper recommends increasing government investment in professional counselling training, integrating counselling programs in schools, workplaces, and religious institutions, and launching national campaigns to de-stigmatise therapy and mental health services as a step toward national unity and social peace.
